What is the program like? The program begins with a residential Summer Session on the Lyon College campus (six weeks for seniors and five weeks for sophomores and juniors). The centerpiece of the Summer Session is mentored group research in a math or science field such as biology, chemistry, engineering, computer science or physics. Groups of 8-10 students conduct research as a team, formulating the approach to a problem, carrying out experiments and calculations, reaching a conclusion, and preparing a group technical report under the guidance of a teacher/mentor. The Summer Session also includes ACT preparation; tutoring services as needed; an elective class such as Literature, French; photography, psychology or art; cultural and recreational field trips (students visit museums, theaters, ethnic restaurants and other attractions in area cities); a three-day extended field trip to a regional city such as St. Louis, Missouri, Tulsa, Oklahoma, or Huntsville, Alabama; room and board while residing on the Lyon College campus; a variety of other social and recreational activities; and a $15 per week stipend for students in good standing. At the end of the Summer Session, a College Action Plan (CAP) is designed for each student, with activities to complete during the school year. These include enrolling in recommended high school classes, taking the ACT (UBMS covers the cost), participating in extra-curricular activities to develop leadership skills, researching colleges of interest, and completing a research activity under the supervision of a Sponsoring Teacher.
